THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT

While matching wits and blows with a crew of Germans aboard a WWI U-33 submarine, Bowen Tyler, his loyal dog, Nobs, the stunning Lys, and a group of tough Brits, become hopelessly lost on the Pacific thanks to an act of sabotage. But soon after land is sighted all hope is crushed. Long lost to the outside world, the land they have discovered—Caspak—teems with prehistoric monsters, and men of every epoch...and they’re hungry.

THE PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT

Tom Billings, close friend to Bowen Tyler, sets out on a rescue mission. Having found Tyler’s bottled note floating in the ocean, Billings is familiar with the dangers of Caspak, but knowledge and experience are not the same. Billings quickly finds himself alone in the land of dinosaurs and ape-men, on the run and accompanied by a beautiful Caspak native—Ajor.

OUT OF TIME’S ABYSS

Bradley, one of the surviving Brits from Bowen Tyler’s crew sets off into the interior of Caspak in search of Billings and a way home to England. He cuts a path through the sinewy jungle and emerges at the heart of Caspak, where he uncovers the horrible secret—a race of hideous creatures that beyond scientific classification...beyond all imagining.

Foreword

EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS along with Jules Verne (The Mysterious Island and Journey to the Center of the Earth) and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (The Lost World) is one of the founding fathers of lost world/forgotten civilization fiction. With novels like The Land that Time Forgot and Beyond Thirty, he took readers of the early 1900s on amazing adventures, the likes of which had not been told since, perhaps, Homer penned the Iliad and Odyssey.

In The Land that Time Forgot and the two follow up tales, The People that Time Forgot and Out of Time’s Abyss, the reader is taken to a land, not far from Antarctica, named Caspak. This long lost realm, hidden in a deep valley sheltered from the Antarctic chill is home to the most peculiar menagerie of creatures. From prehistory, to the last ice age, to present day—each and every stage of evolution is presented, not as scientific oddities, but as real and dangerous predators and prey. It is a perilous land and our heroes, Tyler, Billings and Bradley are placed in harm’s way so often that they become almost numb to the danger, whilst never ceasing to fight for their lives.|

While the story* moves at a lightning pace and features chase scenes, battles with ape-men and prehistoric monsters and more than one romantic tryst, the utter care and diligent thought that went into the development of Caspak is obvious. It’s no wonder that so many modern novels have been inspired by Burroughs's tales.

*Note: When I mention “the story” I am referring to all three books in one, as they were originally presented to readers, and are once again in this unique edition.

A quick trip to any bookstore will confirm Burroughs's influence on modern fiction, but by way of example, consider these recently published novels:

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
The Lost World by Michael Crichton
Subterranean by James Rollins
Excavation by James Rollins
Amazonia by James Rollins
Decipher by Stel Pavlou
Atlantis by David Gibbons
Raising Atlantis by Thomas Greanias
Temple by Matthew Reilly
The Codex by Douglas Preston
Domain by Steve Alten

And those are just the books in my private collection! My own novel, Antarktos Rising, which features a lost civilization, dinosaurs and mighty winged warriors is clearly inspired by Burroughs's creations. Not only did he pen a wild and awe inspiring story of a forgotten world and it’s people, but he created a timeless source of inspiration for the generations of writers that followed in his footsteps. For that, myself and all the authors listed above owe him our gratitude. He blazed the trail we so freely walk in, so I say, “Thank you, Mr. Burroughs.”

-- Jeremy Robinson, author of The Didymus Contingency, Raising the Past and Antarktos Rising
